What is Mehr and can it be claimed after divorce?

Mehr (Mahr) is the obligatory gift from husband to wife recorded in the Nikah Nama. It can be prompt (payable immediately) or deferred (payable on demand or on death/divorce). If the Mehr was deferred and not paid during marriage, the wife has a legal right to claim it after divorce. This right is enforceable through the Family Court. In khula proceedings, return of Mehr is often a condition of dissolution.
