What is a succession certificate in Pakistan?

A succession certificate is a court-issued document under Sections 370-390 of the Succession Act 1925 that authorises legal heirs to collect the debts and securities of a deceased person — including bank accounts, investments, and property. Without a succession certificate, banks and institutions will refuse to release assets. The process involves filing a petition in the civil court where the assets are located, publishing a public notice, and attending hearings. It typically takes 2-4 months.
