The British Pakistani Community and NICOP
The United Kingdom is home to approximately 1.6 million British Pakistanis, making it the largest Pakistani diaspora in Europe. The community is concentrated in Birmingham (Sparkhill, Small Heath, Alum Rock), Bradford (Manningham, Girlington), London (Walthamstow, Newham, Tooting), and Manchester (Longsight, Rusholme).
A significant majority — estimated at 70% — trace their roots to Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir. This is the legacy of the Mangla Dam construction in 1966, which displaced over 100,000 people. The UK government offered resettlement and work permits, creating a community that maintains deep ties to Mirpur and the surrounding areas to this day.
For this community, the NICOP is essential. It enables visa-free entry to Pakistan, property transactions (particularly in Mirpur AJK), access to NADRA services, and banking in Pakistan.
Pakistani High Commission London — The Main Location
The primary location for NICOP renewal in the UK is the Pakistan High Commission at 35-36 Lowndes Square, London SW1X 9JN. Consular services operate Monday to Friday, 9am to 1pm. The phone number is +44 20 7664 9200.
Before you visit: Book an appointment online through the PHC London website. Walk-ins are accepted but appointment holders are prioritised. During busy periods — school holidays, Eid season, summer — appointments fill up weeks in advance.
What to bring: Your expired NICOP, valid Pakistani passport, UK proof of address (council tax bill, utility bill, or NHS letter from the last 3 months), two passport photographs with white background, and the processing fee (£18 normal or £36 urgent).
Birmingham and Bradford Consular Camps
For the massive Pakistani communities in Birmingham and Bradford, travelling to London for NICOP renewal is impractical. The Pakistan High Commission addresses this by running periodic consular camps in both cities, as well as in Manchester and Glasgow.
The Birmingham consulate at 58-60 Suffolk Street, Queensway, B1 1QD hosts regular consular services. Bradford's consular office at 73 Godwin Street, BD1 2SH also processes NICOP applications periodically. Check the PHC London website for the current schedule.
These camps allow you to submit your application and biometrics locally. Processing times may be slightly longer since documents are forwarded to London and then to NADRA in Islamabad.
Processing Times from the UK
- Normal processing: 6–10 weeks from submission (£18)
- Urgent processing: 3–4 weeks (£36)
- Consular camp submissions: May add 1–2 weeks to the above
Your new NICOP is posted to your UK address by Royal Mail recorded delivery.
What If You Cannot Visit Any Location?
If distance, disability, work commitments, or other factors prevent you from visiting the High Commission or a consular camp:
- Postal application: For renewals where biometrics are already on file, you may be able to send documents by Royal Mail Special Delivery
- NADRA CROR portal: If you have previously submitted biometrics, the online portal allows completely remote renewal

Common UK-Specific Issues
Name discrepancy between British and Pakistani documents: Very common for married women whose British documents show their married name while Pakistani documents show their maiden name. An affidavit or deed poll evidence resolves this.
Children born in the UK: British-born children of Pakistani parents are entitled to a NICOP. You need the UK birth certificate, parents' passports and NICOPs, and photographs.
Lost NICOP: You can still apply for renewal. Bring your passport, any record of your CNIC number, and an affidavit declaring the loss.
