The Confusion Explained
If you are an overseas Pakistani, you have probably encountered the terms NADRA, NICOP, CNIC, and POC โ and may not be entirely clear on what each means or which one you need. This confusion is extremely common among overseas Pakistanis. Let us clear it up definitively.
NADRA โ The Organisation
NADRA stands for National Database and Registration Authority. It is not a document โ it is the Pakistani government agency that manages all citizen identity and civil registration records. NADRA was established under the NADRA Ordinance 2000 and is headquartered in Islamabad.
NADRA issues: - CNIC (for Pakistanis in Pakistan) - NICOP (for overseas Pakistanis) - POC (for foreign nationals of Pakistani origin) - Marriage, birth, death, and divorce certificates - Family Registration Certificates
When someone searches "NADRA Pakistan," they typically need one of these documents. Our NADRA document service helps overseas Pakistanis obtain any NADRA-issued document remotely.
CNIC โ Computerised National Identity Card
The CNIC is the standard identity card for Pakistani citizens living in Pakistan. It is a smart card containing your photograph, fingerprints, personal details, and a 13-digit unique identity number. Every Pakistani adult residing in Pakistan must have a CNIC.
Key facts about CNIC: - Issued to Pakistani citizens with a residential address in Pakistan - Valid for 10 years (5 years for the old format) - Required for voting, banking, property transactions, and government services within Pakistan - Your CNIC number is the same as your NICOP number
If you move abroad permanently, you should convert your CNIC to a NICOP.
NICOP โ National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis
The NICOP is the identity card for Pakistani citizens who permanently reside outside Pakistan. It carries the same 13-digit identity number as the CNIC but is specifically designed for the diaspora.
Key facts about NICOP: - Issued to Pakistani citizens living permanently abroad - Valid for 10 years - Allows visa-free entry to Pakistan (CNIC holders don't need this since they live in Pakistan) - Required for NADRA services, property transactions, and banking in Pakistan - Can be renewed from any Pakistan Embassy or through NADRA's CROR online portal - NICOP renewal
POC โ Pakistan Origin Card
The POC is for people of Pakistani origin who have given up their Pakistani nationality โ typically those who have acquired citizenship of a country that does not allow dual nationality. The POC provides many of the same benefits as a NICOP (visa-free entry, property rights) without requiring Pakistani citizenship.
Which Document Do You Need?
| Situation | Document Needed | |-----------|----------------| | Pakistani living in Pakistan | CNIC | | Pakistani living abroad permanently | NICOP | | Former Pakistani with foreign nationality only | POC | | Need a marriage/birth/death certificate | NADRA certificate | | Need to authorise someone in Pakistan | Power of Attorney |
Converting Between CNIC and NICOP
If you move from Pakistan to abroad (or vice versa), you can convert your card:
- CNIC to NICOP: Apply at your nearest Pakistan Embassy with proof of overseas residence
- NICOP to CNIC: Apply at any NADRA office in Pakistan with proof of Pakistani residential address
The 13-digit identity number remains the same โ only the card type changes.
Common Questions
Can I use an expired NICOP? No, for official purposes you need a valid NICOP. But you can renew it from abroad.
Can I hold both CNIC and NICOP? No, you can only hold one at a time. If you live abroad, you should have a NICOP.
Is my CNIC number the same as my NICOP number? Yes. The 13-digit number is your unique NADRA identity number regardless of which card format you hold.
