What is NICOP and Why Renew It?
NICOP stands for National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis. It is a machine-readable identity card issued by NADRA (National Database and Registration Authority) to Pakistani citizens who permanently reside outside Pakistan. If you are a Pakistani national living in the UK, USA, Canada, UAE, Australia, Saudi Arabia, or any other country, the NICOP is your primary Pakistani identity document.
The NICOP serves multiple critical purposes. It allows you to enter Pakistan without a visa, which alone makes it indispensable for regular travellers. Beyond that, you need a valid NICOP to conduct property transactions in Pakistan, access NADRA services such as obtaining birth, marriage, or death certificates, open and operate bank accounts in Pakistan, and even vote in Pakistani elections from abroad.
Your NICOP is valid for 10 years from the date of issue. Once it expires, you must renew it. An expired NICOP cannot be used for official purposes, though there is no penalty for late renewal โ you can renew it at any time, even years after expiry.
Who is Eligible for NICOP?
Any Pakistani citizen who holds a valid Pakistani passport and resides permanently outside Pakistan is eligible for a NICOP. This includes dual nationals โ if you hold British, American, Canadian, or any other citizenship alongside your Pakistani nationality, you are still eligible. Children born abroad to Pakistani parents are also eligible, though they will need their own application with parental documents.
Complete Documents Required for NICOP Renewal
The standard documents required for NICOP renewal are consistent across most countries, with minor local variations:
- Your original expired or expiring NICOP card
- A valid Pakistani passport (photocopy of data pages)
- Proof of overseas residence โ a utility bill, bank statement, or government-issued document from the last 3 months
- Two recent passport-sized photographs with white background
- Your 13-digit CNIC number (if you previously held a CNIC)
- Marriage certificate if your name has changed since the last NICOP
- Processing fee payment receipt
If you need any supporting documents such as an affidavit for name discrepancies, our team can prepare those for you.
NICOP Renewal from UK โ Step by Step
The United Kingdom has the largest Pakistani diaspora in Europe โ over 1.6 million British Pakistanis. The NICOP renewal process in the UK is handled through the Pakistan High Commission in London at 35-36 Lowndes Square, SW1X 9JN.
Book an appointment online before visiting. Bring all required documents plus UK-specific proof of address (council tax bill, utility bill, or NHS letter). Fees are approximately ยฃ18 for normal processing and ยฃ36 for urgent. Normal processing takes 6โ10 weeks; urgent takes 3โ4 weeks.
If London is too far, consular camps are held periodically in Birmingham, Bradford, Manchester, and Glasgow โ particularly useful for the large Mirpuri communities in these cities.
NICOP Renewal from USA โ Embassy & Consulate Guide
The USA has around 500,000 Pakistani Americans, with the Pakistan Embassy in Washington D.C. and consulates in New York, Los Angeles, Houston, and Chicago all processing NICOP renewals.
The New York consulate at 12 East 65th Street serves the largest community and is the busiest. Houston and Chicago tend to have shorter wait times. Fees are approximately $15 for normal processing and $30 for urgent. An important alternative for US-based Pakistanis is NADRA's online CROR (Card Renewal for Overseas Residents) portal, which allows repeat applicants to renew entirely online.
NICOP Renewal from Canada โ Ottawa & Toronto
Canadian Pakistanis can apply at the Pakistan High Commission in Ottawa or consulates in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. The Toronto consulate at 4881 Yonge Street serves the massive Greater Toronto Area Pakistani community, including Mississauga and Brampton. Fees are approximately CAD $20 normal and CAD $40 urgent.
NICOP Renewal from UAE โ Dubai & Abu Dhabi
The UAE has one of the largest Pakistani populations globally โ over 1.5 million. The Pakistan Embassy in Abu Dhabi and Consulate General in Dubai both process NICOP renewals. UAE processing tends to be faster than Western countries โ typically 4โ6 weeks โ due to proximity to Pakistan. Fees are approximately AED 60 normal and AED 120 urgent.
NICOP Renewal from Australia โ Canberra & Sydney
Australian Pakistanis can apply at the High Commission in Canberra or the Consulate General in Sydney (Chatswood). Processing from Australia typically takes 8โ12 weeks due to distance, so apply well before your NICOP expires. The Sydney consulate is more accessible for the large Pakistani community in the Lakemba area.
Common NICOP Renewal Problems and Solutions
Problem: Biometrics not on file. If this is your first NICOP or your biometrics have expired, you must visit an embassy or consulate in person. There is no way around this requirement.
Problem: Name discrepancy between passport and NICOP. If your name on your passport differs from your NICOP (common after marriage), you will need a marriage certificate or affidavit to support the name change.
Problem: Lost NICOP. If you have lost your NICOP, you can still apply for renewal. You will need to provide your CNIC number and may need to submit an affidavit declaring the loss.
Problem: Application stuck in processing. NADRA processing delays happen. We can track your application directly with NADRA and follow up on your behalf.
